THE VOYAGE
The inspiration for this season's collection was Robert Paltock's 1750 novel The Life of Peter Wilkins: A Cornish Man. In the sci-fi romance, Wilkins flees England, only to be captured and sold into the slave trade.
He eventually escapes on a stolen ship, but becomes grounded. After several months he comes across the subterranean and bountiful Graundevolet, full of fruit and vegetables. Eventually, he meets and falls in love with the beautiful Youwarkee, a woman who posses the power of flight. They travel to Nosmnbdsgrutt, the home of the flying Glumms and Garwys, and reason with the king to abolish slavery.
Wilkins' story and the fictional paradise of Graundevolet and Nosmnbdsgrutt are reflected in flowing silhouettes, natural materiality and accessories perfectly suited for carrying fruitful provisions. Screenprinted copies of the original engravings by Peter Botard also decorate accessories, helping bring to life the early sci-fi narrative that inspired the collection.
